We've assembled a list of a handful of Clone Wars and Rebels episodes that can help get you in the mood for Rogue One. In most cases, these episodes probably won't have any direct ties to the new movie, but they do explore similar themes and can help fans get into the right mindset as they prepare to learn how the Rebel Alliance scored its first major victory against the all- powerful Galactic Empire. The Clone Wars. True to its name, this episode focused on a group of rookie Clonetroopers struggling to defend their base from a deadly droid attack. There's a lot to obsess over in the latest trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, from the incredible cinematography to the introduction. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) on IMDb: Movies, TV, Celebs, and more. It was the first installment of the series to really focus on the clones themselves and the idea that each one has a unique personality and outlook despite being built from identical genetic stock. The episode centered around five clones in particular, all of whom would go on to impact the course of the series in its six seasons. This episode is relevant to Rogue One for several reasons. For one, it features a cast of non- Jedi heroes battling a relentless and overwhelmingly superior enemy. For another, it offers insight into the minds of Palpatine's troops and the expendable way he treats his minions. We're expecting Rogue One to offer a closer look inside the inner working of the Imperial military, and we suspect that things haven't changed all that much in the shift from Clonetroopers to Stormtroopers. A grunt is still a grunt. We're expecting Vader to play a pretty minor role in the conflict compared to the film's main antagonist, Director Orson Krennic, but we're still hopeful that Rogue One will offer some insight into Vader's place in the Empire and where his mind is at two decades after the destruction of the the Jedi Order. But if nothing else, fans can witness a crucial moment in Anakin Skywalker's evolution from beloved hero to feared enforcer in . Here, Anakin is shown a glimpse of the terrible downfall awaiting him at the end of the Clone Wars. And even though his memory is wiped afterward, fans are left to wonder how much those visions accelerated his fall to the Dark Side. The Citadel Trilogy (Season 3) A recent Rogue One TV spot confirmed that Grand Moff Tarkin will also put in an appearance in the new movie. No doubt Tarkin will be itching to finally take command of his planet- rending battle station. Again, we doubt Tarkin will play a large role in the film, but it's worth diving back into Clone Wars to learn more about Tarkin's rise to power during the Clone Wars and how his cold but respectful friendship with Darth Vader came about. There's no better place to look than this trilogy of Season 3 episodes that began with . It turns out that Tarkin is one of those prisoners, and it isn't long before this cold, calculating commander begins budding heads with the cocky Anakin. By the end, the two characters part with a sense of mutual respect that will have deep ramifications for the galaxy. These episodes are also relevant because, like Rogue One, they revolve around a small band of heroes infiltrating an enemy facility to steal a strategically important prize. The prize in this case being people rather than data, but it's the same idea. The Onderon Quadrilogy (Season 5) If there's any set of Clone Wars episodes with direct ties to Rogue One, it's these four. The Onderon storyline (which began with . Here, Gerrera is still a youthful and idealistic soldier fighting to liberate his home world of Onderon from the Separatist armies. These episodes show how Gerrera and his fellow soldiers were trained by the Jedi and managed to take back their home, though at a terrible cost. Basically, everything you need to know about what shaped this death- haunted, lifelong revolutionary is contained here. We've discussed in the past how this was achieved and how the lingering legacy of the Jedi may play into the events of Rogue One. This later episode of Clone Wars offers some insight into how the process of turning the Republic against the Jedi began. Both the Season 5 finale and the end of a longer arc involving Anakin's Padawan Ahska being framed for murder, . With heavy roles for both Palpatine and his new favorite underling, Tarkin, . Even the architecture in this episode showed a clear shift from Prequel to Original Trilogy motifs. Rebels. With that in mind, it only makes sense to go back to the beginning of the series to see where it all started. These Rebel heroes are seen through the eyes of young Ezra Bridger, an orphan who become swept up in the fight against he Empire and becomes Kana's first Jedi apprentice. Will any of these characters actually show up in Rogue One? We're not holding our breath, but it's safe to say that the Rebel Alliance wouldn't have been able to mount its attack on the Death Star without the efforts made by these heroes. In this episode, Ezra is sent undercover to attend the Imperial Academy on Lothal. Along the way, he strikes up a friendship with a fellow cadet named Zare Leonis. Far from being the faceless soldiers they are in the films, this episode showcases the fact that Stormtroopers are real people with their own backgrounds and their own thoughts on the Empire's actions. This episode is also notable because Ezra's quest involves tracking down a powerful kyber crystal the Rebels fear will be used to fuel a new super- weapon for the Empire. We probably don't need to point out what super- weapon they're referring to. These shadowy minions of Darth Vader helped their master carry out his ongoing mission to purge all trace of the Jedi from the galaxy. And in this episode, viewers learned their most sinister purpose. The Inquisitors have been tasked with kidnapping Force- sensitive infants to ensure that no new generation of Jedi will ever rise up to challenge Palpatine. Needless to say, this episode is also vital to understanding the state of the Jedi Order during Rogue One and how Palpatine managed to so thoroughly cleanse them from the galaxy. It's also a strong showcase for newer team member Ahsoka Tano, paving the way for her eventual showdown with her former master at the end of the season. Even Darth Maul joined in on the fun, which helped to make up for the lack of closure the villain received in The Clone Wars. But it was the Ahsoka/Vader duel that truly makes this episode worth watching. How much of the old Anakin Skywalker remains? How is he affected by seeing his old Padawan in the flesh again? True to form, Vader wasn't very forthcoming with his feelings during this encounter, but this episode nonetheless offered a rare closer look at the man beneath that ebony armor. It could be argued that Vader's redemption didn't start with discovering that his son is alive, but rather here, confronted by the ghosts of his past. That's pretty much the premise of this Rebels episode, except with Sabine doing the infiltrating. Her goal isn't to steal top- secret plans, but to recruit Imperial Academy defectors and provide the Rebel Alliance with a badly needed infusion of new pilots. One of those defectors is none other than future Rogue Squadron leader Wedge Antilles. This is another crucial episode in terms of understanding the psychology of Imperial recruits and the growing tide of anti- Imperial sentiment leading up to the events of Rogue One. We're holding out hope that Wedge will have some sort of role in the new movie, and this episode offers the definitive account of how and why he switched sides in the first place.
